Cummins Inc. Selects LMS as Preferred Engineering Partner for Engine Development

Communiqué de presse par date16 Sep 2002

LMS International announced today that it has signed a two-year agreement with Cummins Inc. to provide engineering services as well as test and virtual prototyping solutions for NVH and dynamic analysis. LMS Engineering Services will support Cummins with LMS Virtual.Lab and LMS Test.Lab software solutions for development of high-horsepower products. At a later stage of development, LMS will provide the expertise to do powertrain matching – simulating the functional performance of the engine in a variety of applications.

Using world-class LMS solutions to support the unique LMS hybrid-engineering approach, Cummins Inc. will be able to test and refine the engine long before they build expensive physical prototypes for their high-horsepower engine family. LMS and Cummins will start by benchmarking existing Cummins engines, and then move to setting targets for their next-generation engines. They will then create hybrid prototypes that accurately simulate the real world dynamics and NVH behavior of the engine.

LMS and Cummins engine specialists will combine test data related to the loads, materials and responses of the components with corresponding FE models in LMS Virtual.Lab. The resulting hybrid models, made with proven LMS simulation technology, will accurately reflect the functional performance of the engine. Results of these vibro-acoustic simulations will give Cummins the engineering insight needed to avoid major design errors, refine the NVH performance and reduce their overall development cycle.

The LMS engineers will be leveraging the practical knowledge gained from over 20 years on powerplant development projects in automotive, aerospace, and other industrial sectors. Cummins CTO, John Wall, appreciates their experience. "LMS International was chosen as a partner due to their expertise in NVH, their wide range of software solutions and their corporate vision of process-focused solutions such as LMS Virtual.Lab. The decision to partner with them seemed natural considering the direction both companies are heading in the future," he said.

“The agreement leverages the proven development expertise, market presence and deployment capabilities of both Cummins Inc. and LMS International”, stated LMS Chairman and CEO Urbain Vandeurzen. "We are excited about bringing our breakthrough hybrid engineering technology to the world-class Cummins organization. Cummins shares our vision and strategy of combining the strengths of Test and CAE together in a dynamic engineering environment. We look forward to working closely together and leveraging this vision to deliver new products to the marketplace faster, better and at lower cost.”
