LMS Partners with DEP

Advanced solution slashes acoustic meshing time

LMS International has announced a partnership relation with Detroit Engineered Products (DEP, Detroit, USA) to create a new software module that will dramatically accelerate the acoustic modeling process. A modeling process that took a couple of weeks should be reduced to a couple of hours.

Acoustic modeling is widely used in the mechanical industries to predict the sound that a product, such as a powertrain, will radiate. Once the model is built, the design can then be refined and optimized in "virtual space" long before a physical prototype is made. This results in better products, a shorter development time - and significant cost savings.

The LMS/DEP technology addresses a major bottleneck in the current process: the creation of the acoustic mesh for Boundary Element Analysis. The creation of this mesh is required to reduce the complexity of the structural model, so that it only reflects those physical features that will have an effect on the acoustic behavior. Because the model complexity is significantly reduced, often by a factor of ten, it results in a much faster acoustic solver run. Indeed, it sometimes makes it possible.
The unique LMS/DEP approach can be likened to wrapping the structure with a rubber sheet: the element size of this rubber mesh being related to the frequency range of interest. Small surface features such as a bolt-hole or a small rib are therefore smoothed, but those features which determine the acoustic response remain. In tests, a car powertrain with over 150,000 elements was reduced to an acoustic mesh of 5,000 elements in just a couple of hours. Previously, it would take a couple of weeks to interactively reduce the size of the model.

The technologies form part of the global LMS engine solution process, and will make it possible to perform efficiently a full powertrain acoustic analysis.  The technology will be provided in the first wave of LMS next generation CAE solutions, called LMS Virtual.Lab. The first release of Virtual.Lab will be introduced in the fall of this year.

According to Pierre Guisset, LMS CAE Business Development Manager, "For years we have been looking for efficient solutions to automatically convert large powertrain FEA models into proper Boundary Element models for acoustic radiation.  DEP’s meshing technologies simply removes this bottleneck, and, combined with the SYSNOISE ATV-based solver, we can now provide the ultimate acoustic radiation prediction solution".

According to Radha Krishnan, President of DEP, "DEP’s mission is to develop path breaking FE/CFD meshing technologies that could cut down model building time tremendously. We are delighted that LMS has seized this strategic advantage".
