Sound Intensity Testing and Analysis

Sound intensity measurements reveal the actual flow of acoustic energy and are a vital part of a variety of acoustic testing applications, including source ranking and source localization analysis to identify and quantify critical sound sources. These measurements help engineers decide which countermeasures are most efficient. Sound intensity measurements are also often used as a troubleshooter to detect acoustic leaks and hot spots.

These measurements help engineers decide which countermeasures are most efficient. Sound intensity measurements are also often used as a troubleshooter to detect acoustic leaks and hot spots.

Stationary sound intensity techniques are very common. They can be performed in situ, which requires a limited investment since dedicated measurement facilities are not actually necessary. This unique advantage makes the technique extremely practical for ISO-based sound power testing according to ISO 9614 standards.

The LMS Test.Xpress platform is the ideal solution for ISO certification testing based on sound intensity for both point (ISO 9614-1)  and scanning (ISO 9614-2) methods. Critical results such as ISO field indicators (F1, F2, F3 and F4), calculated levels (sound power, sound intensity and pressure intensity) are presented in tabular format and corrective actions are suggested if the ISO criteria are not met. The process is completed with detailed report in MS Excel and/or Word that contains all ISO required information. The data from certification measurement can be reused for source localization with identification and ranking of sound sources.

The LMS Test.Lab platform is meant for in-depth sound engineering. The LMS Test.Lab workflow concept guides the operator through the entire testing and analysis process. LMS Test.Lab Sound Intensity Testing and Analysis supports traditional pressure-pressure intensity probes, but can also integrate more innovative pressure-velocity probes from Microflown Technologies or even robotized solutions. Acoustic researchers further use LMS Test.Lab Sound Intensity Testing and Analysis to determine the acoustic properties of various materials and components. ,

Acoustic Quantities

The amount of noise emitted from a source depends on the sound power of that source. The sound power is a basic characteristic of a noise source, providing an absolute parameter that can be used for comparison. This differs from the sound pressure levels it gives rise to, which depend on a number of external factors.

Using LMS triggered sound intensity isolates transformer noise
